Many adults report that their fears and anxiety about visiting the dentist stem back from a bad experience they had as a child. This is one of the many reasons that creating a positive experience for children when they visit the dentist is so important.

At Anthony Bartels, DDS, our team is family dentistry-focused. We aim to create a welcoming and positive environment in which children receive dental care. Here's what you should know.

When Should My Child Have Their First Dental Appointment?

Dr. Bartels and the American Dental Association agree that children should see a dentist after their first teeth erupt or by their first birthday. Parents may feel this is early; however, these early visits allow us to begin forming a positive relationship with your child while monitoring their oral development. It also helps them acclimate to visiting the dental office and being in the exam chair.

When they're old enough and comfortable visiting us, we'll incorporate teeth cleanings into the visits.

How Can I Prepare My Child for Their First Dental Visit?

Parents play an integral role in helping their children develop positive relationships with the dentist. Talk to your child about it before their appointment and keep the conversation positive, even if you feel apprehensive about the dentist.

You can read stories about the dental office or color pictures to create a fun activity for your child.

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?

Children need to visit their dentist every six months. This allows our team to inform parents of any developmental problems early on when it's easier to treat them.
